Birdwatching in the traces of Bruno Liljefors

Sommarnatt med änder som lyfter från marken.

Welcome to join us at the Thiel Gallery for an inspiring morning of birdwatching around Isblandskärret on Djurgården together with the bird expert  Lars-Erik Larsson, former head of the Biological Museum. During our tour we'll follow the movement of the birds in the landscape – just like the artist Bruno Liljefors did when he with patience and passion captured the beauty of the nature on his canvases.

The Thiel Gallery situated in an Art Nouveau Villa on Djurgården is renowned for it's remarkable collection of Scandinavian art from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum is the former home of the art collectors Signe Maria and Ernest Thiel who were close friends to Liljefors and shared his interest in nature. With over fifty paintings in the Thiel Gallery, Liljefors definitely has an important role in the history of the collection and as we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the museum we want to take the opportunity to acknowledge him a little extra.

Liljefors' paintings are full of life and movement – ducks quickly lifting and eagles sweeping down towards It's prey. With impressing richness of the details he captured the natural behavior in a time when nature was often tamed and organized. Liljefors' paintings also creates a larger story of nature's often dramatic scenes, the shifting light and the connecting rhythm of it all.

Where and how?

For about two hours (with a break) we'll walk through forest and through the reed around Isbladskärret. We'll learn about the colouring and behavior of the birds and the causes behind it. We'll meet mallards and grebes but also the large flock of herons and many other birds. Bruno Liljfors was inrested in different types of biotopes, with the panorama painting at the Biological Museum as the prime example
