About the Composer and the Music

A few years before the Thiel Gallery opened to the public in 1925, Maurice Ravel created an orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky's piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition, which had its premiere in 1922 in Paris. The piece, previously known mostly in Russia, immediately gained international recognition and was performed throughout Europe and the United States.  During the 1920s, the original piano version therefore also experienced a revival and became an important part of the piano repertoire.

This year, the Thiel Gallery celebrates its 100th anniversary. The piano concert Pictures at an Exhibition, performed by the pianist Maja Korp, is part of the jubilee programme.
